About 2 years ago, I joined a dear friend on his religious deconstruction journey.

We’ve shared countless social media posts, read several of the same books, and had more lengthy conversations than I can count. It has been beautiful.

One of my favorite recognitions has been how many biblical words had very different meanings in their original language and context.

My experiences with spirituality and divinity have been that it is universally available, abundant, and benevolent.

I am drawn to the work of Eckhart Tolle and Dr. David Hawkins, as it explains these experiences beautifully and gives context to the inner workings of our minds and souls as humans.

My favorite word to gain a new understanding of is the word “sin”. Translated from 7 nouns and 2 verbs in the Bible with varying meanings.

The one Jesus is recorded as having used is “hamartia”, a morally neutral Greek word that means to “live blindly,” “miss the mark” or “miss the point of life”.

I love this so much because of how it resonates with my understanding of a Creator as a universally loving and available source.

When we tap into ourselves and tap into that higher power, we can elevate our consciousness.

We can shift out of our egoic thought patterns, based solely upon scarcity and survival, and into our higher selves.

We can experience abundance, clarity, joy, authenticity, and present-moment embodiment.

Heaven on Earth, if you ask me.

Note for readers:

The word "homosexual" did not appear in any Bible in any language until 1946. It arose when the Standard Bible Committee combined two Greek words, malakoi and arsenokoitai, which meant something very different than our modern understanding of a person with a homosexual orientation.

There is a beautiful documentary about this, 1946 the Movie, that is periodically available as they work to secure a streaming platform. It is available virtually right now, the first week of Pride Month. See their Instagram, @1946themovie, for details.

"Hell", "repent", and "salvation" also had very different meanings in their original language and context, but I will let you explore this as you choose. ChatGPT is an incredibly helpful tool for quick summaries.
